I always loved Halloween as a child, but growing up in the 80’s and 90’s, Fall decorations consisted mostly of scarecrows, cardboard door hangings, and orange, pumpkin shaped leaf bags for your yard. There weren’t aisles upon aisles of Fall decor to peruse at Target or Homegoods, and when it came to the big day (trick-or-treating, of course) almost all of my childhood costumes were homemade.
To say that Halloween has changed in the last few decades is quite the understatement. And while I love the nostalgia of a traditional Halloween, the opportunity to decorate your home for the Fall season, or specifically for October 31, has brought on countless design choices nowadays, regardless of your own personal home style.
Since having kids, I’ve been forced to really step up my Halloween game. Typically this relates to the outside of our home, however, last year on a whim I decided to add a fun pop of color to our entryway with a Halloween balloon display. My 2 oldest children requested I incorporate pink, so I went with a mix of pink, orange, and black, ending up with a result that was more “spooky-chic” than Halloween traditional. Everything I needed is available currently on Amazon, and linked in the photo below!

I was (and am) an amateur balloon artist, so it was a small labor or love getting this balloon arch to stay up, but with the help of hot glue (low temperature!), string, and removable command hooks, I was pleasantly pleased with the end result. Any imperfections, or spaces between the balloons were covered up by the spider webs stretched across the door frame. The game changer of this project was the electric balloon pump that made filling the balloons a minutes-long process, versus an hours-long one. It’s a cinch to use and I have definitely gotten my money’s worth, having pulled it out multiple times for other quick projects since last fall.
Now that it is officially October, my family has begun asking when we can start decorating again. I’ve been brainstorming ways to change things up this year, and bring some spooky chinoiserie inspired fun into our home decor in a way that I am able to live with (and look at) for a few weeks time.
I’d love to know, how do you decorate for the holiday in your home? What design styles influence you, and what do you add to/take away from your living spaces to make things more festive for Fall?
Happy October!

Katie
