There is granny-chic, and then there is Granny-cheek. Within the Grandmillennial style is a smaller subset of decor that embraces snark, cheekiness, and in occasional instances, what some would describe as tasteful humor. I’ve rounded up some fun examples of my favorite ways to add elements of Cheeky Chinoiserie to your home.
One aspect of the grand millennial style is that it embraces and shows appreciation for traditional design principles that will never truly fade or waver. This includes, but is not limited to: displaying (and using!) fine China, needlepoint pillows, custom embroidery on linens, tablecloths, cocktail napkins, etc.
Occasionally some of the products of this combination result in a touch of snark or humor. While some are classier than others, each of these products, designed to be used in the home, delivers an element of humor that the grand millennial, in particular will appreciate. Personally, having an 8 year old who can read, automatically limits which of these I could incorporate as decor within our home, but if you have a good sense of humor, most of these pieces are nothing but harmless fun.
Linens
One whimsical way to incorporate some fun into your home decor is with a play on words or phrases. This is particularly effective when this results in chic and humorous cocktail napkins, such as these:
I am a really big fan of August Morgan’s cocktail napkins. They are perfect for gifting (her napkins correspond with almost all of the holidays) and equally would make a great hostess gift. Here are some of the ways I have used them in my own home. They are fun to display on a bar cart or table, but more fun to actually utilize and enjoy.
Indelicate Doilies
If you find yourself in need of an unrefined, straight to the point coaster for messy guests (or maybe unwanted ones) look no further that Indelicate Doilies. These are a bit too saucy for my personality (and also, I have a child who is now a reader), but if you are the right person, and have the right home, these coasters exist.
Towels
Towels, whether for your bar cart or bathroom, can also add a big dose of personality to your space. Why keep it boring when you can liven things up (very affordably) with an item such as one of these:
I think probably everyone, this year in particular, would appreciate and enjoy drying their hands (multiple times a day) with a W.T.F. towel.
Needlepoint
Another classy, yet fun way of incorporating chic and cheek into your home is in the form of needlepoint. Here are some of my favorite canvases, from Lycette. While the Lycette storefront is located in Palm Beach, the shop is now accessible online. If you are an avid needle-pointer, or aspiring to become one, all of the following items (and more) can be ordered here.
Learning to Needlepoint has been on my list for too long of a time. I purchased a canvas from Lycette when I was 41 weeks pregnant with my youngest, went into labor a few days later, and I am embarassed to say that it is still sitting in a drawer, only partially completed. Needless to say, it is a 2021 goal. I adore all of the gorgeous canvases out there, and love that Needlepointing is a hobby that seems not only fun and therapeutic, but also one that results in a beautiful piece of artwork, that you can display and enjoy in your home for years to come.
Pillows
Admittedly, the only “real” (completed) needlepoint I have in my home currently has been purchased second hand, and the throw pillows I own, while very pretty indeed, are machine made/mass produced (a.k.a. not the real thing). If you are a needlepoint purist, feel free to scroll past this next part! If you are not picky about your needlepoint authenticity, there are some fun options out there that can add a pop of color and fun to your home. Some of my favorites are pictured below:
China
Anyone who thrifts has come across some lonely dishes and teacups at the Salvation Army, and now there are artists out there giving these items a second chance at life. There is definitely a person, and most likely a plate wall out there that has a need for one of these items in their home. If any of these speak to you, each piece is linked in the caption below.
Miscelanneous
I couldn’t round up enough rugs or dishes to justify a write-up on either category, but I didn’t want to leave these two items out. After all someone may be manifesting these (Links under photo).
If you came across this post, and made it this far, I’m hoping that something I’ve shared on here made you smile. After all, if you can’t laugh in life, what is the point.
I’d love to hear which of these items you love, and how you would use or display them.
Feel free to leave a comment, or share how you incorporate “granny-cheek” in your own home.
xx,
Katie
