Annie requested a “purple and pink” room, because even at 2 years old she had very strong opinions about exactly how she wanted things to turn out. If you know Annie, then you know she can be persistent at times. As we were waiting for her new baby brother or sister to arrive, we decided to keep the nursery a nursery, and I found myself with the chance to create a brand new bedroom in the room we were formerly using as an office. We had a relatively small space to work with, but I was excited to start from scratch. I wanted to create something girly and fun, that would grow alongside Annie. My goal was to chose patterns and furnishings that were more timeless than trendy. Things that she hopefully wouldn’t tire of in time.
Suffice it to say it has been exactly 2 years in her space, and most things remain unchanged. There is certainly some wear and tear, and her bookshelf has been swapped out with a vanity, but the major components have held fast and true. With the addition of a Barbie dream house.
I started with the wallpaper because I knew I wanted to add a pop of pattern behind her headboard and dresser. I wanted something girly and fun (just like Annie). I pretty much consider gingham a neutral, so when I came across this Spoonflower purple and white paper, by domesticate, I knew we had a perfect starting point. The paint I had custom matched, by simply bringing a small wallpaper sample to our local paint store. I had never done this before, and was surprised by how fast and easy it was. If you are looking to match a shade of coordinating wallpaper or fabric, do not hesitate to do this!
I found Annie’s twin sized headboard from the Etsy shop, Coco and Mo. The owner, Danielle, was also as equally pregnant as I was at the time, but so sweet, and still accommodated my order before taking her maternity break. She was amazing to work with, and I will definitely reach out to her again when I am looking for another fun vintage find.
I had been eyeing dressers from Winston’s Collection on Instagram but I never seemed to be quick enough to claim one. When they had a shipment of dressers in and contacted me I couldn’t believe my luck. They were so helpful assisting me to find the perfect paint color, one that really fit the vision I had in mind. If you are looking for a particular piece from their page, my advice would be to reach out to them directly, as they often coordinate shipments together to certain geographical areas.
The waste basket was a collaboration between @tomtomandco and Jayes Studio.
The curtains I ordered from Pottery Barn Teen and are blackout curtains. We actually have the same ones (with black banding) in our bedroom, and they are a great quality for a great price (I recommend!). They are not currently selling them in the hot pink color, but have them in stock with either black or teal ribbons, and you can see those linked here. If you are looking for a similar white and pink set, you can find a similar drape at Pottery Barn Kids, although these are a grommet version.
The book shelf is pottery barn as well, but the Catalina style has since been retired. If you are looking for a close match, you can find a similar, slightly taller one here on Amazon. The amazing artwork is by Willa Heart, and it is one of my favorite parts of the room. I love it so much that I have a smaller version of the same print hanging in Hazel’s nursery. Sort of a cute “sister” tie in, if you will. You can find this cute “Frenchy and Cha Cha” print
. Pictured is the 12 x 16 version, which fit perfectly in a 17 x 22 faux bamboo frame (I forget which size matting I went with, but I’ll remind myself to take a peek, and share!)
I wanted bedding that was white (and could be bleached), but textured, to tie into the white in the curtains, and this eyelet Lilly Pulitzer duvet set from their Pottery Barn Teen collaboration really helped tie the space together for me. The coordinating lace bed skirt is from the same PBKids line. Both are still currently available!
The “Gold Cane” mirror is out of stock but something like this one would add a similar vibe to your space. Since I used gold as an accent tone, I updated our old light fixture to this scalloped brass Suzette ceiling mount from Ballard Design. It is so, so pretty in person and I would literally put this in any room in my house.
This over-sized monogram is the one main piece we took from the nursery and carried over. It happened to fit (albeit a bit awkwardly) over the old fashion doorstop behind Annie’s entryway, (our house was built in 1890) so we decided to make it work.
The “Too much of a good thing is wonderful” pillow came from Furbish Studio, and is sadly no longer on their site. There are so many fun options out there however, and you can really personalize your space by choosing an accent pillow with a fun print, monogram, or quote.
The pink silhouette artwork above the bed I made myself. I’m sure a professional could have done a much better job, but I think it turned out ok! I need to update all of my kids silhouettes, so if you are interested in a fairly easy DIY project, I will likely be sharing a tutorial soon.
I know many designers start planning a room by picking a rug to tie the space down, and maybe I should have taken that advice. For some reason, however, the area rug was the last piece of the puzzle for this bedroom plan. For lack of a better reason, I just couldn’t find one right away that I loved, or was willing to commit to. I wanted something woven, but neutral and fun, and this Society Social pick was the perfect choice. It has held up great, other than a few ground in makeup stains (Annie likes to do tutorials from time to time at her vanity. I’ll post one soon, because they are hysterical). Also, it was affordably priced compared to similar rugs, so also appropriate for a little girls bedroom budget. Sadly, the Society Social rug is unavailable on their website as of now, but this Safavieh 5 x 8 is close in color and currently on sale in case you’re shopping for the same look.
Other small accessories I added to the room are the antique bow hook I found on etsy, which I attached to the closet door. It not only displays Annies, favorite dresses, it makes picking out school and dressy outfits the night before way easier. I also love these two gorgeous chippendale cachepots from Parker Kennedy Living (they share the best finds on their instagram @pklthecellar! The boxwoods are a homegoods find, fit them perfectly, and have held their shape well.
I truly had so much fun putting this space together, and I hope you enjoyed my little “tour”. We truly enjoy this small but happy space, and I love doing bedtimes, and playing Barbies with Annie in her room (when she lets me)! Believe it or not, in the hour after taking these pictures, two years ago yesterday, I went into labor and was off to the hospital to have my littlest babe!
Hazel turned two yesterday, so as crazy as it seems, I will need to be considering an upgrade for her very own “big girl” room in this next coming year (sniff sniff). For the time being, we are keeping her on a nap schedule, and in her crib for as long as she is agreeable! Any decor suggestions are welcomed, though like her big sister, I imagine she will have her own very specific opinions for her next “new” space.
xx, Katie
