I will never quite get past an interview segment that aired on Bravo a few years back, where Martha Stewart, the lifestyle queen herself, equated “pumpkin spice everything” to basic “B” status quo. It lives in my mind as an iconic moment that only Martha could manifest.
Fall, admittedly, is an interesting season. Some people feel strongly that it is overshadowed by Summer’s magic and Winter’s charm. Others think that modern expectations of Fall have shifted in the past decade and have grown too cliche. There is certainly a scale of enthusiasm that ranges from Pumpkin beer to literally pumpkin everything, and a place for everyone somewhere in that spectrum.
Personally, I love Fall in New England. Kids are going back to school. The mornings and evenings are crisp and cool. The crockpot makes a re-appearance. Golden retrievers frock through piles of freshly raked leaves. Fall brings us not one, but two holidays (Halloween and Thanksgiving). Perhaps maybe it is slightly overlooked as far as the seasons go? I’ll let you decide.
I thought it might be fun to try something entirely different and kick off my Fall blogs with a 90’s style cosmo-esque quiz. Select the answers that speak to you the most, then see where you fall (get it?) on the Autumn spectrum. Your results may surprise you!

Mostly 1’s
Your favorite part of September is the seasonal drinks that Starbucks has to offer. You partake in an annual visit to the local farm in order to check the box, take a photo, and post it to Facebook so your relatives can see a photo of Suzy feeding a goat and possibly getting salmonella at the same time (as a caveat of 2021, at least hand sanitizer at farms and petting zoos is a thing now). Warm apple cider donuts are a perk of the trip, but apple picking is a definite no. Let’s be honest, No one wants to sit in a tractor full of smelly hay and spend an afternoon searching through wormy apples when you could buy perfectly good ones at Whole Foods. Likewise, no one needs an entire bushel of Macintosh, especially you. You definitely won’t be baking any pies or churning your own apple butter anytime soon. In all likelihood, in your mind you are already counting down to Hallmark movies and secretly (or maybe not so secretly) dying to put up your Christmas tree.
Mostly 2’s
You are a leaf-peeping-Tom. You love the cozy feeling Fall brings and certainly the perks that come with it. An evening bonfire, cocooned in your favorite Chappywrap with a Shipyard in hand is your idea of a good time. Essentially, you love “feeling” Fall, but don’t love “doing” Fall. You will not be caught going on nature hikes, tapping maple trees, or making crayon leaf rubbings with your kids. Your favorite Fall event might be your neighbor’s October-fest party, where the charcuterie and drink selection is top notch. Football season is celebrated in your home, whether or not you enjoy the game, or just the tailgating part. You love your Fall closet and probably own at least one Dudley Stephens in camel, black, or white, which you wear on repeat.
Mostly 3’s
You frequent Trader Joe’s weekly for their off the charts seasonal selection and can never get past the register without tossing some mini gourds or seasonal scented candles into your cart. All the beverages you serve your company (and you host a lot) are either mulled, spiked, or served in sugar spice rimmed glassware (most of which you’ve acquired from estate sales or were passed down by your Nana). You incorporate a fair amount of Fall decor into your home but it fits in subtly alongside your everyday furnishings (think gingham ribbon tied on ginger jars). You’re of the mindset that unless you live in an actual farmhouse, your home doesn’t need to transform into one for the season. On a Fall weekend you can be found at the thrift, or curled up in bed among your many throw pillows with one of Reese Witherspoon’s latest book club picks.
Mostly 4’s
On September 1st, you trade out your flip flops for LLbean duck boots and hit the ground running. Those pumpkin breads aren’t going to bake themselves. Visitors to your house will note tones of vanilla, cinnamon and orange wafting from the fresh simmer pot you keep on your back burner making your house smell like a Williams-Sonoma. Your Fall bucket list is long and inclusive. Fall weekends are for visiting farms, making jams, football, and decorating for Halloween. Your home likely contains some word art (i.e. signs that say things like “grateful, thankful, blessed”) and your mantel is covered in faux fall foliage and the seasonal treasures you acquire from Homegoods during your weekly visits. You have flannel sheets on some if not all of your beds (possibly year round). If you could Mary Poppins yourself into a Thomas Kinkade photograph and live there surrounded by pumpkin patches and blanketed by foliage, you would do it in a heartbeat.
Regardless of how you chose to enjoy the season, I hope you found some fun in this post! If you scored mostly 1’s, it may be time to spice up your life (couldn’t help myself) and embrace Fall for the wonderful season it is. Fall, after all, is un-be-leaf-able! Keep seizing the moments and making the memories. If you took the quiz and enjoyed it, I would love for you to share this post with others.
Happy Fall!
xx,
Katie
