I have been bitten by the organization bug now that we are spending more time at home than ever before. And while in some ways our “to do” list seems longer than ever, I am finally getting around to some smaller projects that I’ve been pushing off for quite some time.
An attic clean out has been one positive accomplishment over these past ten weeks at home. And along with it, a major purging of outgrown clothes, and (sniff sniff) baby items that we are happy to pass along to others who can enjoy them just as my children and I did.
If you know me personally, then you will know that I am an extremely sentimental person. I can’t make it through a movie or book without tears, and I become extremely sappy looking back at photographs and memories. That being said, you can imagine that pouring through bins of baby bloomers and smocked dresses might prove to be an emotional challenge for me.
While the practical side of me wanted the clutter removed from our home, the nostalgic side of me wanted to hang on to those tiny baby bloomers with every last fiber of my being. I decided to compromise (with myself) and save only the items that 1. I will either pass on to my grandkids, or 2. trigger special memories or moments in time that are extremely meaningful to me.
After doing a little research, I discovered that some storage techniques are better than others. For example, using archival bins such as these memory keepers (this one is beautiful, and acid free tissue paper is included), is preferable to cardboard or plastic storage solutions. Also, making sure that items are properly cleaned and wrapped before packing them away ensures that they will stand up to the test of time and remain in heirloom condition until you are ready to pass them off to a loved one. Another great tip I came across is to store items in a cool, dark place. Avoid exposure to sunlight and attics if possible, as changes in temperature may damage items, especially clothing items, over time.
I ended up putting together a handful of special boxes for my 3 children and included items such a hospital bracelets, christening gowns, homemade blankets, bonnets, journals, and my son’s first pair of Mickey ears, to name a few. I wrapped most items loosely in acid-free tissue paper (here is a link to a great one, if it isn’t already included with your storage boxes), to help protect the fabrics, and limit exposure to mold, dust or anything that may make its way through the boxes. And lastly, I topped each box with a lavender sachet (these ones are perfect for this project), before tying them off. Other than giving off a wonderful fragrance, lavender is known to deter bugs and animals, in the off chance that an unwanted visitor were to make its way into your storage space.
Now that I have checked this small feat off my to do list, I feel satisfied knowing that the things I deemed worth saving are tucked carefully away for safe keeping to pass over to my children some day.
In case anyone else is brave enough to pack away some memorabilia, I’ve included highlighted links below to some of the perfect items needed to tackle this project. Some of these are affiliate links, for which I may earn a small commission. Stay strong with your memory boxes, mamas, and enjoy your trip down memory lane!!!
