Intaglios have been a big home decor trend this year. High end designers are using them in their clients spaces, and if you flip through the pages of some of the more popular home decor stores, you will likely come across a collection or two…but likely at a pretty high price point.
Every Fall I love brainstorming for easy, original Halloween DIY decor options that fit my budget, but also add a classic spooky-chic twist to my home interior. This year, the idea of creating my own faux intaglios, specifically for the Halloween season seemed like a fun decor challenge.
I loved the idea of “making” and framing intaglios, but with a creepy twist for Halloween. Something unique that I could enjoy living with in my home for an entire month of spooky season.
This project was easy, budget friendly, and could be easily replicated with similar materials to create a more traditional display for you to hang in your home year-round. More on that below.
If you are interested in learning more more I will walk you through the few easy steps.
Order your “sin-taglios”. I sourced all of these from Etsy and I’m including each of the (affiliate) links below.
Start off by thinking about how many items you want to display in one frame, and what type of wall display you are looking to create. Are you going for symmetry? A small wall gallery? Or a stand alone piece?
Here are the spooky ones for those of you shopping for Halloween (or those who love spooky year round!)
Once your intaglios have arrived line them up and decide on their arrangement.
Once your arrangement has been established, give them a spray or two (as many coats as needed) until you’ve achieved the look you love. I used a matte ivory colored spray paint for this project that you can find here.
This next step is optional, but I loved the dimension it added to my pieces, it’s a subtle detail but I feel like it made the designs pop. Use a gold paint (my go-to is this one) to coat the edges of your intaglios. You don’t need to be perfect here, if your hand isn’t the steadiest, a slip or two won’t show once your pieces are framed.
Once well coated and dry, Glue your intaglios, (or use putty if you want to re-purpose them-they are light enough) to the backing of your choice and arrange in your frames. Frames with a double mat work for this project since they accomodate the thickness of the cabochons. You can also be super creative here with your paper choices. I went with a navy textured paper to match my entryway rug.
That’s it! Hang your new intaglios and enjoy their look at a fraction of the price you would spend had you bought them at retail. A fun, unique grandmillennial twist on Halloween!
If you enjoyed this post and try it out for yourself I would love for you to share your finished work or tag me on Instagram at @cachepotsandcaftans. You can also find a reel on my account, highlighting the process from start to finish.
Happy October!
